Date: 19/06/2023

The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh

AMIE SECTION "A" (OLD & NEW) EXAMINATION, APRIL 2023

Sub: Physics
Full Marks: 100
Time: 3 Hours
The figures in the margin indicate full marks. The symbols have their usual meaning. Assume reasonable data, if necessary.
There are SEVEN questions in this paper. Answer any FIVE.

Question 1

(a) What are the reasons that led Vander Waals to modify the gas equation? 4
(b) Deduce the equation of state for a real gas. 12
(c) Calculate the value of critical temperature for carbon dioxide where the gas constants are $a=0.00874$ and $b=0.0023$. 4

Question 2

(a) What do you mean by a reversible process of a system? 2
(b) Explain Carnot's cycle with a P-v diagram and derive the expression of efficiency for a Carnot engine. 14
(c) A Carnot engine takes 1000 kilo-calories of heat from a reservoir at $627^{\circ}C$ and exhausts to the sink at 27°C. How much work does it perform? 4

Question 3

(a) Distinguish between Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction of light. 4
(b) Discuss Fraunhofer diffraction due to a single slit and hence obtain the expression of intensity pattern on a screen. 12
(c) In a single slit diffraction pattern, the distance between the first minima on either side of the central maximum is 4.4 mm as observed on a screen at a distance of 0.7 m. The wavelength of light used is 5890 A. Calculate the slit width. 4

Question 4

(a) Write down the characteristics of a simple harmonic motion. 3
(b) Find the resultant of two simple harmonic motions of equal angular frequency when they act at right angles to one another. Then discuss how this resultant shows straight line, circular and elliptical motions. 13
(c) A 4.0-kg block extends a spring 16 cm from its unstretched position. The block is removed and a 0.50-kg body is hung from the same spring. If the spring is then stretched and released, what is the period of motion? 4

Question 5

(a) Differentiate between a travelling wave and a standing wave. 3
(b) Derive the equation of a travelling wave and solve it. 13
(c) One end of a stretched string $(x=0)$ oscillates with an amplitude of 0.01 m and a frequency of 400 Hz so that travelling waves are setup in the positive x-direction. The velocity of the wave is $100~m/s.$ Write the equation of the travelling wave. 4

Question 6

(a) What do you understand by an electric field and electric potential? 3
(b) Find the electric potential at a point on the axis of a uniformly charged circular disc. Hence, find the electric field intensity at that point. Discuss how the potential varies with distance from the centre of the disk. 13
(c) Four charges $1.0\times10^{-8}C$, $-2.0\times10^{-8}C$, $3.0\times10^{-8}C$ and $2.0\times10^{-8}C$ are placed at the corners of a square. The side of the square is 1.0 m. Find the potential at the centre of the square. 4

Question 7

(a) Write down Ampere's law and Faraday's law. 4
(b) Obtain the expressions for: (i) The inductance of a close-packed coil having turns n, length $\ell$ and cross-sectional area A, if a current is passed through the wire of the coil. (ii) The induction of a toroid of rectangular cross-section. 12
(c) Obtain an expression for magnetic field B at a distance from the centre of a long cylindrical wire of radius $R,$ where $r 4
