There are SEVEN questions in this paper. Answer any FIVE.

Question 1

(a) Discuss briefly the considerations which led Van der Waals to modify the gas equation. 4
(b) Derive Van der Waals equation. Show that for a gas obeying Van der Waals equation $\frac{RT_{\epsilon}}{P_{\epsilon}V_{\epsilon}}=\frac{8}{3}$ Where the symbols have their usual meaning. 12
(c) At what temperature, pressure remaining constant, will the root-mean-square velocity of a gas be half its value at $O^{\circ}C?$ 4

Question 2

(a) State the second law of thermodynamics according to Clausias. 3
(b) Describe Camot's cycle and deduce the efficiency of a heat engine. 13
(c) A Carnot's engine working as a refrigerator between 260 K and 300 K receives 500 calories of heat from the reservoir at the lower temperature. Calculate the amount of work done in each cycle to operate the refrigerator. 4

Question 3

(a) Distinguish between Fresnel and Fraunhofer classes of diffraction. 4
(b) Obtain the expression of intensity for Fraunhofer diffraction by a single slit. 12
(c) In a plane transmission grating, the angle of diffraction for the second order principle maximum due to the wavelength $5\times10^{-5}$ cm is $30^{\circ}$, Calculate the number of lines in one centimeter of the grating surface. 4

Question 4

(a) Write down the characteristics of simple harmonic motion. 4
(b) Show that total energy is conserved in simpie harmonic motion. 10
(c) What are Lissajous? Draw the lissajous fiqures when the periods of two simple harmonic motions are equal and their phase difference is $\frac{\pi}{4}$ 7

Question 5

(a) Write short notes on audible, ultrasonic, infrasonic and supersonic waves. 4
(b) What is Doppler effect? Derive expressions for the change in frequency of a note due to the relative motions of the observer, the source and the medium. 16

Question 6

(a) Define electric field intensity, a dipole and a quadruple. 4
(b) Drive an expression for the electric field due to an infinitely long uniformly charged straight wire. 12
(c) Three charges, each of magnitude $q=1.0\times10^{-7}$ C, are placed at the corner of a triangle whose each side has a length of 10 cm. What is their mutual potential energy? 4

Question 7

(a) Write down Ampere's law and Faraday's law. 4
(b) A flat strip of copper of width 'a' and negligible thickness carries a current 'i'. Find the magnetic field at a distance 'R' from the centre of the strip, at right angles to the strip. 12
(c) A long straight wire carries a current of 50 amp. An electron travelling at $10^{7}$ m/s is 5.0 cm from the wire. What force acts on the electron if the electron velocity is directed toward the wire? 4
